Sandra was baptized!

Elder Coletti's Letter 1/22/17:

Good morning Utah!  What an incredible week in Taiwan.  When I was with Elder Anderton, he always talked to me about how he felt like he was running to the finish line.  He was on his last transfer with me as his companion. He saw that finish line and he was putting everything he had into running through that line.  At the time I understood what he was saying, but it didn't really click until this week.  I realize how little time I truly do have left in the mission field.  That finish line is getting closer and closer in the distance.  I want to do everything within my power to finish through....Not to finish at....But to finish through!

Huge miracle:  So when I was in Tao 4 back in March and April of last year, the Tao 3 Elders (which is where I am at right now) started teaching this mom by the name of 李慕億 (Li Mu Yi).  She was awesome!  She absolutely loved the church and the feeling she would get when she went  She really wanted to get baptized.  However, she was not married to her boyfriend/husband yet and she said that there is no way she could be baptized.  There were too many other problems holding her back.  So after I left Taoyuan, the Elders ended up baptizing her daughter 李珺珺(Li Jun Jun).  When I was transferred back to Taoyuan, one of the first things I did was ask about the mom.  Elder Lin had never heard about her.  That following Monday, I looked up her address and biked over to her house (about a 30 minute bike ride).  I found her, but she was in the same situation.  She still could not get married.  She had too many problems that needed to be solved (money, family, etc.).  However, she had another daughter.  Her name was  呂苡婠 (Lu Yi Wan) or Sandra!  We got the LA investigator mom coming back to church, bringing her other daughter.  Sandra is almost 12 years old, and is extremely shy.  She saw how much her sister had changed when she was baptized.  So....Sandra decided to be baptized!  It was an incredible experience, watching Sandra grow and open up.  She really looked up to her sister, and wanted to become better, just like her sister had since being baptized.  We are still working with the mom.  She is super close!  The desire is there, but getting married is not:)  We have met with the husband... err boyfriend, but he is not super interested.  He does think the church is awesome and he has seen a huge difference in his wife... err girlfriend from it.  Keep praying for the Lu Family.

I Love you all!

Competitive and Driven

Elder Coletti's Letter 1/15/17
This last week was a lot of fun!  Elder Lin and I went on exchanges every single day, excluding Sunday.  Super busy helping out other missionaries, which has been so much fun!  Ahhh I love it.  We also had interviews with President Jergensen this last week.  He is amazing.  Such a brilliant man.  He told me really good stuff, that I want to share with everybody!

First off, I was talking to President about when I should start thinking about the post mission.  When I should start thinking about my plans in college, and my plans in life.  He then asked me a couple of questions about what I can and cannot control.  He asked if I can control who I date right now (obviously cannot date as a missionary).  He then asked if I could go to school, and decide what classes I liked, and what I wanted to do for a career.  He then told me, "Elder Coletti, God will not give you revelation for something that you can not do."  I thought about this for a sec.  President was basically saying that at that point in my mission, God wasn't going to give me revelation for 6 months down the road.  Sure He would give me ideas, but He wouldn't give me that clear answer, that definite resolution until I was at that point.  But for the point I am at right now, He wants me to focus on being a missionary.  He wants me to receive revelation to help Him Teach Repentance and Baptize Converts.  That's all.  God is way to smart for us.  And we are way to stupid for him hahaha.  That is what makes God so great.  He takes something so stinking complicated, and makes it so an 8 year old can understand.  So President helped me understand that just rely on God.  God will give me what I need at the time it is needed, at the time I can do it.

President also talked to me about being driven.  He asked me, "What is the difference between being competitive and being driven?"  He then told me that the thing with competition is that there is always a loser.  Now being driven is like being competitive in that you become better.  You look at the person next to you, and you get better in the process.  But the difference between the two is the end result of the person next to you.  Being competitive you try to be better than the person next to you, just to be better.  But being driven is you look at the person next to you, and you are motivated, you are driven to become better.  And in the process of getting better, you bring the person up with you.  You don't get better, just to say you are better than that person, but you get better, just so you can raise them up with you.  So you can both rejoice together.  That's what we are here on earth to do.  To raise eachother.  To help all of our brothers and sisters reach the finish line.  BE DRIVEN.  Driven to finish the work that Christ has started.

Well ya those are some of the stuff President talked to me about.  Such an Inspired man.  I love you all!  Keep pushing.  The pain helps you learn.  But if there's no pain, there's no learning;)

Charlotte was baptized!

Elder Coletti's Letter 1/11/2017:

I love the temple!  I was able to go today and had such a wonderful time, time to just reflect on where I have come from, and where I want to go. I love my mission in Taiwan.  I love everything about it!  I love the people, I love the food, I love the country and I love God;)  Life is good!

This week we had a baptism!  Her name is 陳秋燕 (Chen Qiu Yan) or Charlotte.  She was from my last area in DanFeng.  Elder Anderton and I started teaching her.  Elder Moss came and around that time a new rule was introduced that we, Elders, cannot teach single females unless it is a family.  So, Elder Moss and I passed her over to the Sisters. I was then transferred to TaoYuan.  All throughout the teaching process, Charlotte really wanted to become a better person.  She really did.  However, she had a lot of family problems that were holding her back from committing to church, and committing to a baptismal date.  But, she kept meeting with missionaries.  She kept meeting with Elder Moss and I, and she kept meeting with Sisters.  Eventually she started to change.  She started to realize how she was becoming a better person through the gospel.  She started to overcome the family opposition of her coming to church.  6 weeks later (I was in Taoyuan at the time), we received a phone call, saying that Charlotte wanted to get baptized!  It was incredible!  It completely blew my mind!  I hadn't seen her in over 6 weeks and when I left it seemed like she wasn't quite ready.  She had asked me to baptize her, so we went over to see her Saturday night and she was a transformed human being.  She was a completely different person.  It was amazing to see the transformation and it taught me a very valuable lesson about change.  It is never to late to change.  It doesn't matter how stubborn you are, the gospel can change you.  It doesn't matter how hard you are, the gospel can soften you.  I am so happy to have met Charlotte.  She is so much fun to be around and every time I see her, I can't help but smile!  She is a beautiful human being. No matter what your problem is, the gospel can help. You just need to have faith and hope that you can be helped and you will be changed!

Love you fam!

Happy New Year

Elder Coletti's Letter 1/1/17:

Happy New Year!  What an incredible year.  I can't believe I was in Taiwan from Jan. 1, 2016 until Dec. 31, 2016.  That is the weirdest thing to me!  Where does the time go?!  Time just goes by faster and faster. on the mission  I feel like I have learned a lot in the year of 2016.  How was everybody else's 2016?  Transfers also ended this past week.  Elder Lin and I are staying together, which is going to be a blast.  I'm really excited for the upcoming weeks.

For 2017, think of a vision.  Think of where you want yourself to be at the end of this year.  There is power that comes from creating a vision for ourselves.  No matter how far we see ourselves going, God sees so much more from us.  God sees everything in us.  Be bold and specific in your vision, for with God anything can happen.

Love you Fam!

Merry Christmas!

Elder Coletti's Letter 12/25/16:

Ho Ho Ho!  Merry Christmas!  Wow!  This has been a very special Christmas season to me.  So much love, so much happiness.  Ah I love it.  I love my Savior Jesus Christ.

This week our entire mission got together for a Christmas Mission Conference.  It was a lot of fun.  We all ate, talked, watched a talent show, learned, etc. We just a great time!  One of the talents were two Elders that sang a song.  I had heard the song before and I absolutely loved it.  It's called "How Can I Be?" (I think, but I'm not positive on the title of the song;)).  It is just basically a song about how we can be like the incredible prophets in the Book of Mormon.  "I want to be like Abinidai, I want to be like Samuel the wise, I want to be like Captain Moroni, I want to be like my brother Nephi", etc. They radiated the Spirit.  They followed God.  "I want to be like Jesus Christ"  That was the one that really got me.  I want to be like Jesus Christ.  How can I be like Jesus Christ?  This question has been on my mind all week.  What do I need to do to be more like Him?  That is our purpose on life.  To be like him.  To win this "game" that God has started for us.  Jesus has already played the game.  He has already beat the game.  He knows what it takes for us to win.  That is why he gave us a "playbook" in order to help us succeed as well.  In order to help us win.  We are all on the same team here.  We all want to win the "game".  We all need to help each other win the "big game"!  That is what Jesus has done for us.  We need to be strive to be like him, and help others find this "playbook".  This is what all of these phenomenal prophets in the Book of Mormon have done.  They are sharing the "playbook of salvation".

The Room

Elder Coletti's Letter 12/18/16:

I cannot believe it is Christmas this week!  Yes!!!!!!!  This Christmas season has been very special to my heart.  I have felt the Spirit in so many different ways.  I am so glad to be on my mission during the Christmas season.  My testimony of Jesus Christ keeps growing bigger and bigger.  I recently read about the suffering of Jesus Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane in the book Jesus the Christ.  Jesus Christ is everything.  He plays a part in everything we do.  My mom and my best friend both sent me this story this week, so I had better share it too!;)  I know that Jesus Christ is the center in everything we do.  He is there when we most need him.  Remember him this Christmas week!  He is the reason we celebrate.  Rejoice in our Redeemer.  Love you all!  Merry Christmas!

The Room

Joshua Harris

"Finally He turned and looked at me from across the room. He looked at me with pity in His eyes. But this was a pity that didn't anger me. I dropped my head, covered my face with my hands and began to cry again..."

In that place between wakefulness and dreams, I found myself in a room. There were no distinguishing features in this room save the one wall covered with small index card files. They were like the ones in libraries that list titles by author or subject in alphabetical order. But these files, which stretched from floor to ceiling and seemingly endlessly in either direction, had very different headings. As I drew near the wall of files, the first to catch my attention was one that read "Girls I Have Liked". I opened it and began flipping through the cards. I quickly shut it, shocked to realize that I recognized the names written on each one.

And then without being told, I knew exactly where I was. This lifeless room with its small files was a crude catalog system for my life. Here were written the actions of my every moment, big and small, in a detail my memory couldn't match.

A sense of wonder and curiosity, coupled with horror, stirred within me as I began randomly opening files and exploring their content. Some brought joy and sweet memories; others a sense of shame and regret so intense that I would look over my shoulder to see if anyone was watching.

A file named "Friends" was next to one marked "Friends I Have Betrayed".

The titles ranged from the mundane to the outright weird. "Books I Have Read", "Lies I Have Told", "Comfort I Have Given", "Jokes I Have Laughed At". Some were almost hilarious in their exactness: "Things I've Yelled at My Brothers." Others I couldn't laugh at: "Things I Have Done in My Anger", "Things I Have Muttered Under My Breath at My Parents". I never ceased to be surprised by the contents. Often there were many more cards than I expected. Sometimes fewer than I hoped.

I was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of the life I had lived. Could it be possible that I had the time in my 20 years to write each of these thousands or even millions of cards? But each card confirmed this truth. Each was written in my own handwriting. Each signed with my signature.

When I pulled out the file marked "Songs I Have Listened To", I realized the files grew to contain their contents. The cards were packed tightly, and yet after two or three yards, I hadn't found the end of the file. I shut it, shamed, not so much by the quality of music, but more by the vast amount of time I knew that file represented.

When I came to a file marked "Lustful Thoughts", I felt a chill run through my body. I pulled the file out only an inch, not willing to test its size, and drew out a card. I shuddered at its detailed content. I felt sick to think that such a moment had been recorded.

An almost animal rage broke on me. One thought dominated my mind: "No one must ever see these cards! No one must ever see this room! I have to destroy them!" In an insane frenzy I yanked the file out. Its size didn't matter now. I had to empty it and burn the cards. But as I took it at one end and began pounding it on the floor, I could not dislodge a single card. I became desperate and pulled out a card, only to find it as strong as steel when I tried to tear it.

Defeated and utterly helpless, I returned the file to its slot. Leaning my forehead against the wall, I let out a long, self-pitying sigh. And then I saw it. The title --- "People I Have Shared the Gospel With". The handle was brighter than those around it, newer, almost unused. I pulled on its handle and a small box not more than three inches long fell into my hands. I could count the cards it contained on one hand.

And then the tears came. I began to weep. Sobs so deep that the hurt started in my stomach and shook through me. I fell on my knees and cried. I cried out of shame, from the overwhelming shame of it all. The rows of file shelves swirled in my tear-filled eyes. No one must ever, ever know of this room. I must lock it up and hide the key.

But then as I pushed away the tears, I saw Him. No, please not Him. Not here. Oh, anyone but Jesus. I watched helplessly as He began to open the files and read the cards. I couldn't bear to watch His response. And in the moments I could bring myself to look at His face, I saw a sorrow deeper than my own. He seemed to intuitively go to the worst boxes. Why did He have to read every one?

Finally He turned and looked at me from across the room. He looked at me with pity in His eyes. But this was a pity that didn't anger me. I dropped my head, covered my face with my hands and began to cry again. He walked over and put His arm around me. He could have said so many things. But He didn't say a word. He just cried with me.

Then He got up and walked back to the wall of files. Starting at one end of the room, He took out a file and, one by one, began to sign His name over mine on each card.

"No!" I shouted rushing to Him. All I could find to say was "No, no," as I pulled the card from Him. His name shouldn't be on these cards. But there it was, written in red so rich, so dark, so alive. The name of Jesus covered mine.

It was written with His blood.

He gently took the card back. He smiled a sad smile and began to sign the cards. I don't think I'll ever understand how He did it so quickly, but the next instant it seemed I heard Him close the last file and walk back to my side. He placed His hand on my shoulder and said, "It is finished."

I stood up, and He led me out of the room. There was no lock on its door. There were still cards to be written

Three Baptisms!

Elder Coletti's Letter 12/12/16:

So we have been having baptisms lately!  Let me tell about these incredible people:

謝濬鴻 (Harry):  Harry is 14 years old!  His mom was a long lost LA. Elders dropped by her house back in May.  Her oldest son (Jamie) was baptized in August, and then her youngest son (Harry) ended up getting baptized on December 3!  He is such a fun kid.  He absolutely loves missionaries and is very mature for his age.  He started talking about how he knows that this church can bless his family in the future. I am so happy to have had the opportunity to meet this kid.  I literally love him like my little brother.

賴盈廷 (Lai):  Lai is about 30 years old.  He ran into missionaries on the street back in September and he has been completely golden since then!  He loves learning about the Gospel of Jesus Christ and how it can bless his life.  He goes to the Gospel Principles Class every week and he loves going to church to have a peaceful reassurance.  He has some family problems, but he wants to make things right.  He knows that Christ can help him out.  He is one of the most humble human beings I have ever met.  You can feel his love every time he looks at you.  He wanted to change and he has.

竺藩盛 (Sean):  Sean is very special to me.  Elder Moss and I ran into him on the streets.  During our initial contact with him he had a lot of interest in English, but as we talked to him some more, he opened up.  He talked about how he wants more happiness in his life and that the messages we were sharing might really help him.  Sean is really awkward:)  He is just a little socially awkward because he grew up not having a lot of friends. He started coming to church.  Every time we sat down and had a lesson with him he would really opened up to us. He would talk about what he was thinking and how he was feeling.  He has an incredible testimony.  He knows that this church is true and that it will bring him more happiness.  I love this guy!

Well, that is what has been happening lately!  I am absolutely loving it in Taoyuan!  It is so much fun.  I have a cool lesson on faith that I experienced this week.  While we were biking in the night, we turned down this really small alley. I mean really small! We were probably 1 yard away (on both sides) of hitting the walls.  It was a very, very skinny alley.  It was also at night time and there weren't any street lights.  I literally could not see two feet in front of me.  As scary as this pathway seems, I have biked down it before in the daytime. I knew where it led (Key word: knew).  I knew that it was going to be alright.  As I was biking, I starting to think about how scary this would be if I had  no clue where this alley was going! I think that this is what faith is like!  Sometimes we don't know where the path we are going down leads to.  Sometimes we don't know what the result is going to be.  But when we have faith, it doesn't matter.  We just believe.  We know that it is going to be alright.  We know that we will see the light on the other side.  Faith gives us the power and the desire to keep moving forward.  It tunes out the "walls" to our sides.  It outshines the grim path ahead of us.  It's what keeps us moving forward.

Faith can have failure.  But Faith cannot have disappointment.

Love you!
